What is a WhatsApp click to chat link?
A click to chat link opens a WhatsApp chat with your business in one tap. People don’t have to save your number first, and if you add a ready made message, it’s already typed out for them. All they do is press send.
WhatsApp’s own format is wa.me followed by your full number in international format: the country code first, then your number without its first 0, with no plus sign, spaces or brackets.

Sending a message takes a few seconds, and people can attach photos of the job, so you can see what you’re quoting for before you reply.
Where to put your wa.me link
Anywhere people find you and want to ask a question:
- Google Business Profile. Add it as the chat option in your profile’s contact details, so people who find you on Google Search and Maps can message you.
- Instagram bio. Add it as one of the links in your bio.
- Facebook page. Set your page’s main button to send a WhatsApp message.
- Email signature. A “Message us on WhatsApp” link under your name.
- Your website. Use the button code above, so visitors on their phones can message you in one tap.
- Van, flyers and business cards. Print the QR code. People point their phone camera at it and the chat opens.
Facebook and Instagram ads can open a WhatsApp chat too. Those connect to your number inside Ads Manager rather than through this link, but the same advice applies: a clear first message, and someone ready to reply.
Your WhatsApp QR code on vans, flyers and cards
The QR code holds the same link, message included. Download the PNG for flyers, cards and social posts, or the SVG for sign writers and printers, because it stays sharp at any size.
Before anything goes to print, scan the code with your own phone to check it opens the right chat. Print it big enough to scan from where people will be standing, and keep the white border around it, because scanners need that space to read it.
How to write a good ready made message
The ready made message is the first thing you read from a new customer, so make it tell you two things: what they want, and where they found you.
- “Hi, I saw your van and I’d like a quote for…”
- “Hi, I found you on Google. Are you free this week for…”
- “Hi, I’d like to book a consultation for…”
Use a different message in each place and you’ll know straight away whether an enquiry came from the van, a flyer or your Instagram bio. Keep it short: people can change it before they send, and a shorter message makes a simpler QR code that’s easier to scan.
For links to your website rather than WhatsApp, add tracking tags with the UTM link builder, so you can see which ones bring you visits.
WhatsApp Business app or your personal WhatsApp?
Click to chat links work with both. For a business number, the free WhatsApp Business app is worth having. It gives you a business profile with your address, opening hours and a description, quick replies for the questions you get every day, and greeting and away messages, so people hear back even when you’re on a job. It keeps work chats apart from family ones, and it can run on a landline too.
Answer fast, every time
A link makes it easy to get in touch. What happens next decides whether you get the work, because an enquiry left waiting can book with someone else. The missed leads calculator shows what slow replies cost your business in a year.
We set up instant replies and a CRM for service businesses, so every WhatsApp enquiry gets a fast answer and nothing slips through. See our systems and app builds.
Questions people ask
Does the number need to be on WhatsApp?
Yes. The link opens a chat with that number, so it has to be registered on WhatsApp. If it isn’t, people see an error instead of a chat, so test your link before you share it.
Can I use a landline number?
Yes, with the free WhatsApp Business app. When you set it up, choose to verify the number by phone call instead of text message, and WhatsApp rings your landline with the code.
Do WhatsApp links expire or cost anything?
No. A wa.me link is free and keeps working for as long as the number is on WhatsApp. The QR code holds the link itself, with nothing in between, so there’s no subscription and it never runs out.
Why doesn’t my ready made message show?
Older versions of WhatsApp sometimes leave it out, and people can edit or delete it before they press send. Either way, the link still opens a chat with you.
Can I see how many people clicked my link?
Not from WhatsApp itself. Put the link on a page you already track, or use a different ready made message in each place, like your van, your flyers and your Instagram bio. Then the first message tells you where they found you.
If I change my message, do I need a new QR code?
Yes. The message is part of the link, and the link is what’s inside the QR code. Change the number or the message and make a new code before you print anything.
